The Route
Riding from the East Coast to the West Coast offers so many choices. From the variety of cities to the weather conditions, the route had to offer a little slice of everything. It also had to take into account several important factors.
Firstly, there could be quite a difference in the experience levels of the riders. Riding this distance would mean around 8 hours in the saddle every day, come rain or shine. For riders who are fairly new, there needed to be plenty of opportunity to rest between legs. Riding alone can be fatiguing but being conscious of a group of riders adds another level of concentration, which adds to fatigue.
Next, the size of a motorcycles gas tank matters. There is no fun pounding across a desert to find that you are about to run out of gas so the smallest tank has to be taken into consideration. Tanks would vary from 3 ½ gallons to 6 gallons and so a maximum of 100 mile legs would accommodate all.
One of the benefits of riding across country is the ability to see, feel and breathe in the scenery. As every major city can start to look the same, it was important to by-pass them and plan a trip through the smaller towns, where the real flavor of Americana could be tasted.
Of course, the United States is famous for its Interstate network, but the goal was to limit the use of these. Interstate 95 North would get us out of Daytona Beach and on our way, while Interstate 10 West would complete the route to our destination at Santa Monica Pier. In between, however, the route needed to avoid the interstates.
Finally, although we would love to ride forever, at some point the day job would come calling and so the ride was planned for seven days. This allowed us to keep the ride to less than 400 miles each day, which would help the novice riders.
Each of the seven days can be viewed from the links below, which are subject to change. If your record center is located close to the route, please let us know. We will do our very best to adjust the route and schedule a visit.
